BSc Networks and Cyber Security
About this course
Networks and cyber security addresses one of the most pressing challenges in the digital age: how to design, build, and protect the computing infrastructure that modern society depends on. As organisations and individuals become more reliant on interconnected systems, the vulnerabilities of those systems, and the sophistication of those who seek to exploit them, have grown in parallel. Cyber security is now a critical concern for governments, businesses, hospitals, financial institutions, and individuals, and the demand for professionals who understand how networks function and how they can be defended is consistently high and growing. At Northumbria University this three-year BSc programme develops your understanding of how networks are designed, built, and configured alongside the principles and practice of cyber security in an era when the online world is highly vulnerable to attack. You will study network architecture, routing and switching, security protocols, penetration testing, digital forensics, cryptography, and the software tools used to monitor and secure systems. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in technical security or networking roles and the opportunity to study in an international context. Graduates from networks and cyber security programmes work in information security, network engineering, systems administration, penetration testing, cyber forensics, risk management, and security consultancy. The public sector, financial services, technology companies, defence, healthcare, and critical national infrastructure are all major employers of cyber security professionals. The sandwich year placement significantly strengthens your technical skills and professional network, and many graduates secure employment with their placement organisations. Some pursue postgraduate study or professional certifications to develop specialist expertise in areas such as cloud security, incident response, or ethical hacking.
