About this course
Children's nursing is one of the most rewarding and demanding specialisms in nursing, requiring practitioners to provide compassionate, high-quality care to young patients from infancy through adolescence while also working sensitively with their families and carers. Children are not simply small adults: their physiological, developmental, and psychological needs are distinct at every stage of childhood, and children's nurses must understand those differences and adapt their practice accordingly. Family-centred care, in which parents and carers are partners in the child's recovery and wellbeing, is fundamental to the profession. At Birmingham City University this programme includes a foundation year before the main nursing degree, making the full pathway four years. The foundation year is designed to give students the academic preparation and scientific grounding needed for degree-level nursing study, broadening access to the profession for those who have the right personal qualities and motivation but who benefit from additional preparation. The main degree leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the children's field, and divides your time between academic study and supervised clinical placements across a range of settings, including children's wards, community paediatric nursing, school nursing, and specialist units. BCU's connections to NHS trusts in the West Midlands support a varied and well-structured placement programme. Qualifying as a children's nurse opens a career across the full range of paediatric healthcare. Newly qualified nurses typically begin in hospital or community settings and with experience can progress into specialist areas such as paediatric oncology, neonatal care, children's critical care, or child and adolescent mental health services. Leadership, education, advanced clinical practice, and research are all available progressions. The qualification is internationally recognised. Postgraduate study in children's nursing, advanced practice, or a paediatric specialism is available for those who want to develop further expertise or move into academic roles.
