About this course

Dual-field nursing in adult and mental health is a demanding and distinctive programme that prepares you to register as a qualified nurse in two of nursing's four fields simultaneously. Adult nursing is concerned with the care of people from young adulthood through old age, addressing acute illness, long-term conditions, surgery, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care in hospital and community settings. Mental health nursing focuses on the care and support of people experiencing mental health conditions, from depression and anxiety to psychosis and personality disorders, working across inpatient, crisis, and community mental health services. The two fields connect in practice at every turn, since physical and mental health are deeply intertwined, and nurses who understand both are exceptionally well placed to provide holistic, person-centred care. At Edge Hill University, this four-year Master's programme develops your clinical skills, leadership capabilities, and professional knowledge across both fields. The dual registration means you will graduate with the ability to practise in a genuinely wide range of clinical settings and to adapt to the evolving needs of a healthcare system that is increasingly aware of the connection between physical and mental health. Extensive practice opportunities are embedded throughout the programme, giving you the clinical experience needed to develop competence and confidence in both fields. On qualifying and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in both adult and mental health nursing, you will have exceptional flexibility in your career choices. You may choose to work in one field or to practise across both, and your dual qualification will distinguish you as a practitioner with a broad and integrated view of patient care. Career pathways include acute hospital nursing, community nursing, mental health inpatient and community services, crisis teams, integrated care roles, and clinical leadership. Further study in advanced practice or specialist areas is available for those who wish to develop their careers further.
