BSc Nursing (Adult)
About this course
Adult nursing is one of the most fundamental and wide-ranging of the healthcare professions. Adult nurses provide care for people across the full adult lifespan, from young adults to the elderly, in settings that range from acute hospital wards and critical care units to community teams, care homes, and patients' own homes. The role demands a combination of clinical knowledge, technical skill, compassionate communication, and the ability to make sound judgments in complex and sometimes urgent situations. Adult nurses are at the centre of healthcare teams and are often the most consistent professional presence in a patient's care. At the University of Hull, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as an adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, clinical assessment, evidence-based practice, and the care of people with a wide range of conditions, from cardiovascular and respiratory illness to cancer, mental health comorbidities, and long-term conditions. Theory and clinical practice are integrated throughout: you will spend a substantial proportion of your time on practice placements in real healthcare settings, developing your skills under supervision and building the professional identity and judgment that nursing demands. You will be taught to assess patients, plan and deliver care, evaluate outcomes, and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Hull's nursing programme is supported by the university's simulation facilities and its partnerships with NHS providers across the Humber region, giving you access to a wide range of placement environments. Graduates go on to work as registered adult nurses in the NHS, independent healthcare, and the voluntary sector. Many go on to specialise in areas such as critical care, oncology, diabetes, or community nursing. Postgraduate study, advanced practice qualifications, and routes into nurse prescribing or specialist practitioner roles are available for those who wish to develop their careers further.
