BSc Nursing (Adult)
About this course
Adult nursing is the branch of nursing concerned with the care of adults across the lifespan, from young adults to older people, in hospital and community settings. Adult nurses care for people with a wide range of conditions, from acute medical and surgical emergencies to chronic long-term conditions, cancer care and palliative medicine. The role requires clinical knowledge, technical skill, interpersonal sensitivity and the ability to coordinate care effectively across complex health systems. At the University of Leeds, the three-year full-time BSc is built around academic study and clinical placements in a range of NHS and community settings, including wards, primary care, mental health and specialist services. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, clinical assessment, nursing theory and the evidence base for nursing practice, developing the knowledge and clinical competence that professional nursing requires. The teaching is informed by active research, ensuring that the academic content reflects current best practice. The degree includes a year abroad, which is an unusual feature of a nursing programme and provides the opportunity to study nursing in a different healthcare system, broadening your understanding of how nursing is practised internationally. Leeds's large NHS teaching hospitals and diverse clinical placements give you exposure to a broad range of clinical environments and patient populations during your training. Graduation from a nursing degree leads to eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse. Registered nurses work across all NHS settings and in private healthcare, with opportunities to develop specialist clinical, management and research roles. Postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, specialist nursing or healthcare management is available for those who want to develop their expertise.
