BSc Nursing (Adult)
About this course
Adult nursing is one of the most directly impactful healthcare professions, involving the care and support of adults living with illness, injury, disability, or the challenges of ageing, across the full spectrum of NHS and independent healthcare settings. Nurses are the largest single group of healthcare professionals in the UK and are central to the delivery of compassionate, effective care, working as autonomous practitioners, as part of multidisciplinary teams, and increasingly in leadership and advanced practice roles. The profession demands clinical competence, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to patient dignity and safety. At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme leads to registration as a nurse on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register in the adult nursing field. You will study anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment, evidence-based practice, and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern professional nursing. Clinical placements are an essential part of the programme, providing supervised practice in a range of settings including hospital wards, community services, mental health facilities, and other specialist environments. These placements give you direct patient care experience and the professional confidence that registration-level practice requires, and they form a substantial part of the degree. Nursing graduates who achieve NMC registration work across the NHS, independent hospitals, care homes, community health services, occupational health, the military, and international healthcare organisations. The profession offers strong employment security and a wide range of specialisation pathways, including critical care, oncology, theatre nursing, district nursing, and community practice nursing. Further study and professional development are integral to a nursing career, with routes leading to specialist practice, advanced clinical practice, nurse prescribing, and leadership roles.
