BSc Nursing (Adult)
About this course
Adult nursing is a vocation as much as a profession, requiring a combination of clinical knowledge, practical skill, emotional intelligence and ethical awareness. Adult nurses care for people across the full span of adult life, from young adults to older people, in settings ranging from acute hospital wards and intensive care units to community clinics, care homes and people's own homes. The discipline rests on a rigorous understanding of human physiology, anatomy, pharmacology and pathology, combined with the interpersonal skills to support patients and families through illness and recovery. At the University of Nottingham this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who need additional preparation before entering the main degree, making a nursing career accessible to a wider range of students. You will study both the science of the body and the art of care, learning to assess patients, plan and deliver interventions, evaluate outcomes and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Clinical placements are a fundamental part of the programme, taking you into real healthcare settings where you develop the practical competence and professional judgement that nursing demands. The programme prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Registered adult nurses work across the full range of healthcare settings, with particular demand in NHS hospitals, community trusts, mental health services and independent care providers. Specialist clinical pathways include intensive care, emergency nursing, oncology, cardiology, theatres and many others. Many nurses go on to postgraduate study in areas such as advanced clinical practice, nurse prescribing, public health or specialist nursing, and increasing numbers move into leadership, education or research roles within healthcare organisations. Nursing is a profession that consistently offers both personal fulfilment and strong employment prospects across the UK and internationally.
