BSc Nursing (Adult)
About this course
Adult nursing is one of the most demanding and most rewarding professions in healthcare, requiring practitioners who combine clinical knowledge with exceptional communication skills, resilience, and a commitment to patient-centred care. Adult nurses work across a wide range of settings, from acute hospital wards and intensive care to community nursing, care homes, and specialist clinics, supporting patients through everything from routine procedures to critical illness and long-term condition management. The breadth and variability of the work is one of the things that makes nursing genuinely compelling as a career. At the University of Stirling, whose nursing programmes are approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you will study adult nursing over four years full-time, developing the clinical knowledge, practical skills, and professional judgement that the role demands. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment, evidence-based practice, and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern nursing care, alongside the interpersonal and communication skills that are central to working effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to experience nursing practice in a different national and cultural context, which broadens your professional perspective considerably. On qualifying, nurses register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and can work across the NHS, independent healthcare, and the voluntary sector. The range of specialisms available, including emergency care, oncology, critical care, and palliative care, means that nursing careers can develop in many different directions. Many nurses go on to postgraduate study to specialise further or to move into advanced practice, nursing education, or leadership roles. The profession faces consistent demand for qualified practitioners across the UK.
