About this course
Adult nursing is one of the most directly meaningful careers available to a graduate: you will work with people at some of the most vulnerable and significant moments of their lives, providing care that makes a real and visible difference. Nursing is not simply a technical profession, though clinical competence matters enormously: it is also a role that calls on the full range of human qualities, including compassion, communication, resilience, ethical judgement, and the ability to lead in complex and sometimes pressured situations. A degree in adult nursing prepares you to become a compassionate, competent, and confident nurse capable of leading safe, person-centred care across a range of clinical settings. At York St John University, this three-year full-time programme is designed to develop you as a registered nurse through the integration of academic learning and extensive clinical practice. You will study anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment, evidence-based practice, person-centred care, and the ethical and professional frameworks that govern nursing, alongside substantial hours of supervised clinical placement that expose you to real patient care in hospital and community settings. The programme prepares you for the Nursing and Midwifery Council registration examination required to practise as a registered nurse in the UK. With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, this degree offers a well-supported route into one of the NHS's most in-demand professions. Registered adult nurses work in hospital wards, intensive and critical care, surgical and medical units, community and district nursing, mental health liaison, care homes, and primary care. The nursing qualification also opens routes into specialist practice, leadership, education, research, and advanced clinical roles including nurse prescribing and advanced nurse practitioner posts.
