Mental health nursing is a specialist branch of the nursing profession dedicated to supporting people of all ages and backgrounds experiencing mental health difficulties, from anxiety and depression through to psychosis, personality disorders, eating disorders, and the mental health dimensions of physical illness. Mental health nurses work in inpatient units, community teams, crisis services, prisons, schools, and primary care, forming lasting therapeutic relationships and providing both clinical and emotional support during some of the most difficult periods of people's lives. The work demands empathy, resilience, and strong clinical skills in equal measure. At Swansea University, this three-year full-time degree prepares you for registration as a mental health nurse. You will develop the knowledge and clinical competencies required to work effectively with people experiencing mental health difficulties, studying the psychological, social, and biological dimensions of mental health alongside the therapeutic approaches and professional values that underpin good nursing practice. Substantial clinical placements are woven through the programme, giving you hands-on experience in a range of mental health settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners. Swansea notes that mental health nurses play a vital role in supporting people at some of the most difficult and challenging times of their lives, which reflects the purpose and weight of the work the degree prepares you for. Graduates who qualify as mental health nurses are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and can practise in NHS and independent sector settings across the breadth of mental health services. Career progression into specialist roles, community nursing, management, nurse practitioner positions, and clinical leadership is well supported.
