About this course

Mental health nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding fields within the nursing profession. It requires clinical knowledge, compassionate communication, and the ability to build therapeutic relationships with people experiencing acute psychological distress, chronic mental illness, or the effects of complex trauma. Mental health nurses work alongside psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other professionals to support recovery and to help people live as independently and fully as possible. At the University of Winchester, this four-year full-time integrated degree with foundation year provides a route to nurse registration for those who do not yet meet the entry requirements for direct entry to the nursing degree. The foundation year is designed specifically for mature learners who may have been out of education for some years, or for those who need to build their academic confidence and foundational knowledge before studying at degree level. It provides the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to progress into the full nursing programme. Throughout the degree, you will develop the theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills required for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a mental health nurse. You will learn to assess and respond to a wide range of mental health conditions, to work ethically and within relevant legal frameworks, and to practise with the empathy and professionalism that the field demands. Clinical placements are a central element of the degree, providing supervised experience in a range of mental health settings and ensuring that your practical competence develops alongside your theoretical understanding. Graduates register with the NMC and go on to work in acute mental health wards, community mental health teams, crisis and liaison services, forensic settings, eating disorder services, and a range of other specialised and general mental health environments. Many go on to advanced practice, leadership, or postgraduate study in mental health or related fields.
