About this course

Mental health nursing is a profession that responds to some of the most complex and demanding situations in healthcare. Mental health nurses work alongside people experiencing a wide range of psychological conditions and crises, from acute psychosis and severe depression to personality disorders and substance dependence, providing clinical care, therapeutic support and coordination with multidisciplinary teams across inpatient, community and specialist settings. The profession requires both clinical rigour and the kind of human sensitivity that cannot be reduced to procedure. At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time programme integrates a foundation year into the degree, providing a supported entry route for students who want to build their scientific and academic foundations before progressing into the nursing programme. The foundation year includes study of relevant biological science, including the immune system and microbiology, which provides context for later clinical learning. As you progress through the programme, you will develop the clinical knowledge, assessment skills, pharmacological understanding and therapeutic relationship competencies that mental health nursing demands. Clinical placements in a range of settings give you the practical experience that registration requires. Successful completion of the programme leads to registration as a mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is the professional qualification required to practise in the UK. Graduates work across the NHS, voluntary sector mental health organisations, independent hospitals and community services. Many go on to specialise in particular areas of mental health nursing, including forensic mental health, child and adolescent mental health, crisis services or eating disorders. Leadership, clinical education, advanced practice and research are all well-established career pathways in the profession.
