About this course

Adult nursing is one of the most wide-ranging healthcare professions, requiring both scientific knowledge and the ability to care for people across the full span of adult life, in acute wards, community settings, mental health environments, and long-term care. Pre-registration training prepares you to meet the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, qualifying you to practise safely and to continue developing throughout a career that can take many different directions. At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme builds the fundamental knowledge and practical skills that pre-registration nurses must demonstrate in order to care effectively for people across all ages and care settings. The curriculum is directly linked to the NMC platforms and proficiency statements, combining theoretical study with practical skills sessions and placement experience. You will explore all four fields of nursing during the early part of your training, gaining breadth before specialising, and will work in mixed-field theory groups that reflect the collaborative nature of real healthcare environments. The programme begins with a structured induction to the healthcare environment, including a skills rehearsal week and a period of role socialisation, before you move into supervised clinical placements in a hub setting. This careful progression ensures that by the time you are working with patients, you have the preparation and support structures in place to learn effectively from practice. Throughout your training you will develop your ability to assess and respond to patient needs, to work within the legal and ethical frameworks that govern nursing, and to communicate clearly with patients, families, and colleagues. Graduates register with the NMC as adult nurses and go on to work in NHS hospitals, community nursing teams, mental health services, care homes, and private healthcare. Many pursue specialist training in areas such as critical care, oncology, or district nursing, and some go on to advanced practice or postgraduate study in nursing, healthcare management, or education.
