BSc Nursing Studies (Registered Nurse Adult Nursing)
About this course
Adult nursing is the foundation of the NHS and of health systems worldwide: the majority of direct patient care across hospitals, community services, and long-term care is delivered by registered nurses. It is a profession that combines deep scientific knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology with the interpersonal skills, ethical judgement, and clinical expertise that safe, compassionate care demands. Becoming a registered nurse requires both rigorous academic preparation and substantial supervised clinical experience. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time degree is studied in an environment deliberately designed to replicate the real world of professional nursing, giving you the time and space to develop your skills before your first placement and ensuring that theory and practice are integrated at every stage. You will learn alongside students from the university's other nursing programmes as well as midwifery, paramedic science, and medicine, mirroring the interprofessional teamwork that defines real clinical environments. This interdisciplinary exposure is built into the curriculum from the outset, preparing you for the collaborative working that registered nurses are expected to engage in throughout their careers. Clinical placements give you supervised experience across a range of adult care settings, developing your practical competence and professional confidence. Surrey's location in the south-east of England gives you access to a range of NHS Trusts, community health services, and specialist providers during your placement years. Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and go on to work across acute medical and surgical wards, community nursing, specialist services, and primary care. Many go on to advanced practice training, specialist nursing qualifications, or postgraduate study in clinical nursing, healthcare leadership, or research. Adult nursing is a profession with strong job security, genuine variety, and the opportunity to make a direct and meaningful difference to people's lives.
