About this course

Nursing is one of the most important and demanding professions in the health service. Nurses provide direct care for patients across the full range of clinical settings, supporting recovery, managing symptoms, administering treatments and offering the human presence and communication that is central to the experience of being cared for. The profession requires a combination of scientific and clinical knowledge, practical skill, emotional intelligence and ethical commitment that the nursing degree develops systematically over three years of full-time study at the University of Liverpool. This programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your nursing knowledge and skills in an international healthcare context. You will study human biology and pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment and clinical skills, evidence-based practice, leadership and management, public health and the ethical and legal frameworks governing nursing practice. A significant proportion of the programme is spent on clinical placement, working in NHS and other healthcare settings under the supervision of registered nurses, developing your competence and confidence as a clinician. By the time you graduate, you will have the clinical hours and the demonstrated competencies required for registration. Graduating from an approved nursing degree enables you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a registered nurse, which is the professional requirement for practising nursing in the UK. Registered nurses work across hospitals, community settings, mental health services, schools, care homes and many other environments. Career progression can lead to specialist practice, advanced clinical roles, management and leadership, nurse education and research. Nursing remains one of the most important and, at its best, most rewarding careers in public life.
