BSc Occupational Therapy (extended)
About this course
Occupational therapy is the healthcare profession concerned with enabling people to participate in the everyday activities that are meaningful to them, despite the effects of illness, disability, injury or the challenges of ageing. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages across a huge range of conditions, from stroke rehabilitation and mental health recovery to supporting children with developmental difficulties and enabling older adults to remain independent at home. The profession is built on the understanding that doing things, work, leisure, self-care and social participation, is fundamental to health and wellbeing. At the University of Northampton, the three-year full-time extended programme provides a structured path to professional qualification in occupational therapy. You will study the theory and practice of occupational therapy across a wide range of clinical areas, including physical rehabilitation, mental health, learning disabilities, paediatrics and community care. Clinical placements are central to the programme, giving you direct experience of occupational therapy practice in a range of real-world settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners. Northampton's health science programmes have performed strongly for career outcomes, reflecting the quality of professional training the university provides. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council is required to practise as an occupational therapist in the UK, and the degree provides the academic and clinical preparation needed for that registration. Occupational therapists work across the NHS, local authorities, social care, private practice and international healthcare settings. The profession offers strong employment prospects and a genuine variety of clinical contexts. Senior roles in specialist clinical practice, management, research and education are accessible with experience and further qualification.
