BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the study of emergency and urgent pre-hospital care, preparing students for registration as paramedics and for the complex, often high-stakes clinical decisions that paramedics make every day in the communities they serve. Paramedics are the first clinicians on scene at medical emergencies, trauma incidents and psychiatric crises, and they must be able to assess patients accurately, make rapid clinical judgements and initiate life-saving treatment before or during transport to hospital. The role demands clinical expertise, composure under pressure and exceptional communication skills. At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for a rewarding career in a fast-paced environment where you will work to assess patients' conditions and make potentially lifesaving decisions about treatment and hospital transfer. You will develop the clinical knowledge, practical skills and professional values needed to practise safely and effectively as a paramedic, combining academic study with extensive clinical placement experience in ambulance and other pre-hospital settings. Brighton's established links with South East Coast Ambulance Service and other NHS providers support a placement programme that gives you broad and meaningful clinical exposure across a range of emergency and urgent care situations. Graduates who complete the programme are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as paramedics and can pursue careers with NHS ambulance trusts, the military, air ambulance services, event medicine, industrial healthcare and a growing range of specialist paramedic practice roles including advanced and critical care paramedics. The profession has expanded significantly in scope and responsibility in recent years, with paramedics now practising in urgent care centres, GP practices and mental health crisis services. Postgraduate study in advanced practice, critical care or a clinical specialism is available for those who want to develop their practice beyond initial registration.
