BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic Science is a degree that prepares you for one of the most demanding and directly impactful roles in healthcare: responding to medical emergencies, making rapid clinical assessments, delivering pre-hospital treatment, and transporting patients safely to definitive care. Paramedics work at the frontline of the emergency medical system, often operating with significant clinical autonomy and under conditions of genuine uncertainty, drawing on a broad base of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical practice. At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year, full-time degree is developed in partnership with South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, giving the programme strong clinical connections and ensuring that your learning is grounded in the realities of pre-hospital emergency care. You will combine academic study of the underpinning sciences with substantial supervised practice in real emergency settings, developing the technical skills, clinical reasoning, and professional judgment that the role demands. The partnership with an NHS ambulance service means that your placements give you genuine frontline experience throughout the programme. Graduation from this programme leads to eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a paramedic, which is the professional gateway to practising in the UK. Graduates work primarily within NHS ambulance services in emergency, urgent care, and patient transport roles, and increasingly in a wider range of settings including emergency departments, general practice, and specialist pre-hospital care teams. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, critical care, or healthcare management, for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into leadership roles within the profession.
