BA Philosophy and Beginners' Italian
About this course
Philosophy is the discipline that asks the most fundamental questions available to human reason: what is knowledge and how is it possible, what is the nature of reality, what makes actions right or wrong, and what is the relationship between language and the world it describes? Studying philosophy develops the capacity for rigorous argument, conceptual precision, and the ability to reason carefully about contested and difficult questions. Italian, one of the great European languages, opens access to an extraordinary literary and intellectual tradition that has shaped Western art, philosophy, music, and thought across centuries. At the University of Oxford, this four-year, full-time programme combines the rigorous training in philosophical analysis that Oxford is famous for with the study of Italian from beginner level, so no prior knowledge of the language is required. You will explore questions across the full range of philosophy, from epistemology and metaphysics through ethics, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of art and literature. Oxford's view is that philosophy illuminates the intellectual background of great literature, and the combination allows you to encounter major Italian thinkers and literary traditions with both the linguistic access and the philosophical framework to understand them in depth. Oxford's tutorial system provides intensive and personalised intellectual engagement with your subject throughout the degree. A typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the very competitive admissions process. Graduates from philosophy with a modern language go on to careers in law, the civil service, journalism, academia, publishing, international business, cultural organisations, and education. The combination of rigorous analytical training and Italian language proficiency is distinctive, valued particularly in international careers that require both precise thinking and cross-cultural engagement. Many graduates continue to postgraduate or doctoral study in philosophy, Italian studies, or related fields.
