BA Philosophy and Beginners' Modern Greek
About this course
Philosophy and Modern Greek is an unusual and intellectually stimulating combination that joins one of the great analytical disciplines with the living language of a nation whose ancient predecessor gave Western philosophy many of its founding texts. Philosophy asks what exists, what can be known, how we should live, and what makes reasoning valid: it addresses the deepest questions about mind, reality, ethics, and language. Modern Greek opens the world of contemporary Greek literature, culture, and society, while also providing a connection to the ancient philosophical tradition through the language's direct descent from Attic Greek. At the University of Oxford, this four-year, full-time programme takes the philosophy component to the highest level of analytical rigour while simultaneously building Modern Greek from the beginning. Oxford's philosophy faculty is one of the world's finest, and the tutorial system means you engage intensively and regularly with specialist tutors in both philosophy and Modern Greek studies. You will study logic, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind as the core of the philosophical curriculum, while developing Modern Greek from scratch to a level at which you can engage with literary and cultural texts in the original. The combination is demanding in a way that rewards students who are intellectually ambitious and comfortable working across two quite different modes of inquiry. A typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points reflects Oxford's highly selective entry standards for this programme. Philosophy at Oxford develops exceptional analytical precision, clarity of thought, and the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments. The language dimension adds cultural breadth and communicative range. Graduates pursue careers in law, the civil service, the diplomatic service, academic philosophy, journalism, education, international organisations, and the cultural sector. Many proceed to postgraduate study in philosophy, classics, or Byzantine and modern Greek studies.
