About this course
Philosophy and Beginners' Portuguese is a degree that combines the intellectual rigour of analytical and continental philosophy with the acquisition of one of the world's most widely spoken and culturally rich languages. Philosophy trains you to reason carefully about fundamental questions: what can we know, how should we act, what is the nature of reality and of mind, and how does language relate to thought? Portuguese opens access to the cultures, literatures, and histories of Portugal, Brazil, and the Portuguese-speaking nations of Africa and Asia, encompassing an enormous diversity of peoples and creative traditions across several continents. At the University of Oxford, the Philosophy component develops analytical rigour and the ability to criticise and reason logically, allowing you to apply these skills to questions ranging from epistemology and ethics to the philosophy of language, art, and literature. The programme is designed for students who are new to Portuguese, making it accessible regardless of prior language experience, and building linguistic competence progressively through the four years of the degree. Because many great works of literature are shaped by the dominant philosophical ideas of their epoch, the two subjects illuminate each other: philosophy provides the intellectual context for literature, and literature demonstrates philosophy in human and narrative form. This is an unusual and ambitious combination that develops exceptional skills in analytical reasoning, linguistic competence, and cross-cultural understanding. Graduates build careers in academia, law, journalism, the civil service, diplomacy, international business, the arts, and many other fields where the combination of rigorous thinking and linguistic reach is valuable. Postgraduate study in philosophy, Portuguese or Lusophone studies, or comparative literature is a natural next step for those who wish to pursue specialist research or academic careers.
