BA Philosophy and English Literature
About this course
Philosophy and English literature are two of the oldest and most searching disciplines in the humanities, and they complement each other in ways that are both intellectually and practically valuable. Literature explores the human condition through narrative, character, and language, inviting you to inhabit perspectives radically different from your own. Philosophy examines fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, reality, and meaning through careful argument and analysis. Together, they develop your ability to think with precision, to read with attention, and to articulate ideas with clarity and confidence. At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time programme draws on both traditions to give you a broad and rigorous education in ideas and expression. You will engage with major philosophical questions, including who we are, what we can know, and how we should live, exploring how great thinkers across history have approached them and how those answers still shape the way we think. Alongside this, you will read widely in English literature, developing the close reading and critical interpretation skills that are central to literary study. The programme trains you to make your point of view stand out with both substance and style, and to communicate complex ideas effectively to different audiences. Graduates from philosophy and English literature programmes are well-equipped for careers that demand strong thinking and communication. Journalism, publishing, education, public policy, law, and the civil service are all common destinations, and the ability to analyse complex texts and construct well-reasoned arguments is valued in virtually every professional context. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, literature, cultural studies, or law, and some pursue careers in writing, research, or academia.
