About this course
Philosophy and politics address some of the most enduring and pressing questions in human life: what is justice, how should power be distributed, what do we owe to one another, and on what grounds can political authority claim our allegiance? Studied together, these two disciplines form a particularly powerful combination. Philosophy provides the tools for rigorous conceptual analysis and ethical reasoning; political science brings those tools to bear on the real structures of states, international institutions, parties, and movements. The result is a mode of inquiry that is both principled and empirically grounded. At the University of Bristol, this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, giving you a supported introduction to both disciplines before the main programme begins. In philosophy you will engage with major traditions in ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind, learning to construct and evaluate arguments with precision. In politics you will study comparative government, international relations, political ideologies, and the empirical methods used to study political behaviour and institutions. The two strands are in constant dialogue, with political theory providing a bridge between them. The skills you develop on this degree, critical thinking, careful reading, structured argument, and the ability to assess evidence and competing claims, are highly transferable. You will learn to engage seriously with difficult questions and to communicate complex ideas clearly in writing and discussion. These capacities are valued across a very wide range of careers and contexts. Graduates from philosophy and politics programmes work in the civil service, public policy, think tanks, journalism, law, international development, and non-governmental organisations. The degree is also strong preparation for postgraduate study in philosophy, political theory, law, or international relations. Many graduates also enter the private sector, where the analytical skills the degree develops are valued in consultancy, strategy, and management.
