BA Philosophy and Spanish
About this course
Philosophy and Spanish at the University of Oxford pairs two disciplines with deep and surprising connections. Philosophy asks the most fundamental questions about how we know what we know, what we ought to do, what language is, what it means for something to exist, and how we should think about art and beauty. Spanish opens access to one of the world's most widely spoken languages and to a literary and intellectual tradition that has produced some of the most philosophically rich writing in world literature, from Cervantes and the Spanish mystics through to Unamuno, Borges, and the vast output of Latin American thought. Many of the canonical works of Spanish literature are deeply shaped by the philosophical ideas of their period, and studying both disciplines together gives each a depth it would not achieve alone. You will develop rigorous analytical skills through the philosophical strand, learning to construct and evaluate arguments, analyse concepts precisely, and reason carefully about questions in epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, logic, and the philosophy of language. The Spanish strand will develop your linguistic proficiency and your engagement with a wide range of literary and cultural texts, read in the original and interpreted with attention to their historical and intellectual contexts. Oxford's tutorial system places exacting demands on you in both disciplines, requiring sustained independent work and extended written argument. A typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the selectivity of the Oxford programme. Graduates from philosophy and Spanish at Oxford pursue careers in academia, law, journalism, publishing, diplomacy, public policy, international business, translation, and cultural institutions. Many continue to postgraduate research in philosophy, Spanish studies, or related fields, using the intellectual formation Oxford provides as a foundation for advanced scholarly work.
