BA Philosophy & Ethics and Sociology (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Philosophy and ethics, combined with sociology, brings together two disciplines that are both concerned with understanding how human beings live together and what makes a good or just society, but that approach these questions in different ways. Philosophy and ethics work through rigorous conceptual argument, examining the foundations of knowledge, morality, free will, and meaning. Sociology uses empirical methods to understand how societies actually function, how inequality is produced, and how social institutions shape individual lives. Together, they equip you to ask both what is the case and what ought to be. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time degree with foundation year is designed to be intellectually challenging and personally engaging. The philosophy and ethics strand asks life's biggest questions: what is the basis of morality, do we have free will, what does it mean to be human, and does life have meaning? You will examine your own assumptions and develop the ability to construct and evaluate arguments with precision and intellectual honesty. The sociology strand gives you the empirical tools to understand the social world, exploring how class, race, gender, and other social forces shape the conditions of people's lives. The foundation year builds your academic foundations before you enter the core degree programme. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all features of the degree, giving you professional and international dimensions alongside your academic development. The combination of philosophical rigour and sociological enquiry develops analytical and critical thinking skills that are applicable across many fields. Graduates go on to careers in education, social research, the civil service, policy, journalism, the law, the voluntary sector, and community and social work. Many pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, ethics, sociology, social policy, or related areas. The degree is also well suited to those who want to enter professions requiring both critical thinking and social awareness.
