About this course

Philosophy, politics and economics, widely known as PPE, is one of the most intellectually demanding and professionally valuable combinations a student can study. Each discipline brings something the others cannot: philosophy develops rigorous critical thinking and the ability to analyse arguments and assumptions; politics provides analytical frameworks for understanding power, institutions and public life; economics offers quantitative and theoretical models for understanding markets, incentives and resource allocation. Where they intersect is where the most important questions about how societies work are to be found. At the University of York, you will grapple with the various problems that shape society, exploring the theory behind policy and questioning the morality of competing systems of government. The programme runs for three years full time and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and integrated work placement opportunities. This combination of structural features is generous: the placement and sandwich year give you professional experience during the degree, the year abroad broadens your perspectives on political and economic systems beyond the UK, and the placements build the practical context that PPE graduates need to translate their analytical skills into professional impact. The typical entry tariff is 152 points. You will learn to approach different societal issues in a rounded, nuanced way, developing the kind of multi-disciplinary thinking that is needed to understand complex policy questions, international relations, ethical dilemmas and economic challenges. The skills this develops, analytical rigour, clear writing, evidence-based argument and cross-disciplinary synthesis, are valued across many careers. Graduates from PPE programmes work in the civil service, politics, think tanks, journalism, finance, law, international organisations, consultancy, and academia. The breadth and rigour of the combination make PPE graduates highly adaptable and well regarded by employers who value clear thinking about complex problems. Further study at postgraduate level in any of the three disciplines, or in public policy, is a common next step.
