BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is the discipline that asks the questions other subjects tend to take for granted. What can we know, and how can we be certain of it? What makes an action right or wrong? What exists, and what does it mean for something to exist? These are not merely abstract puzzles; they are the foundations on which science, law, politics, and ethics all rest. Studying philosophy develops a kind of thinking that is rigorous, sceptical, and precise, and that turns out to be useful in almost every domain of professional and intellectual life. At the University of Nottingham, this three-year, full-time degree offers a thorough grounding in the main branches of the discipline, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of mind. You will engage with canonical texts in the Western philosophical tradition and with contemporary debates that draw on those foundations. The programme includes a foundation year, which provides an introductory route into the subject for students who arrive with strong potential but without a prior background in philosophy. Throughout the degree you will practise the close reading of arguments, the construction of your own positions, and the clear written and verbal communication of complex ideas. Philosophy at Nottingham benefits from a research-active department where staff work across a wide range of areas, and you will have access to specialist teaching that reflects current thinking in the field. You will be expected to engage seriously with texts that are sometimes difficult and to take intellectual positions that you can then defend under scrutiny. This kind of training in structured reasoning is among the most transferable of any undergraduate degree. Graduates go on to a remarkably diverse range of careers, including law, finance, public policy, journalism, education, technology, and management consultancy. Many pursue postgraduate study in philosophy or in related fields such as law, politics, or cognitive science. The degree is consistently valued by employers who need people capable of analysing complex problems and communicating clearly under pressure.
