MA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is concerned with the most fundamental questions available to human reason: what can we know and how, what is the nature of reality and mind, what makes actions right or wrong, and how should we reason about contested and uncertain questions? These are not merely academic puzzles: they are the questions that underlie every domain of human inquiry and every dimension of practical and social life. Studying philosophy develops rigorous critical thinking, the ability to construct and evaluate arguments, and the confidence to engage independently with complex ideas, skills that are valuable in virtually every career and context. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time programme familiarises you with the full range of the philosophical tradition, from ancient and medieval thought through early modern and Enlightenment philosophy to the analytic and continental traditions of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. You will engage with historical and contemporary work, developing your capacity to critically assess arguments, identify hidden assumptions, and reason with clarity and precision. The programme includes a year abroad, broadening your academic horizons and giving you the opportunity to encounter different philosophical traditions and methods. A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the academically demanding nature of the programme at one of the UK's leading universities for philosophy. Philosophy graduates are consistently valued across a wide range of careers precisely because the skills the discipline develops, critical analysis, precise communication, and the ability to handle complex and contested ideas, transfer to almost any professional context. Careers include law, the civil service, journalism, education, management consulting, public policy, finance, and academic research. Many graduates continue to postgraduate or doctoral study in philosophy, law, political theory, or related fields, using their undergraduate training as a foundation for advanced specialist work.
