MA Philosophy with Spanish
About this course
Philosophy is the discipline that asks the most fundamental questions: what exists, what we can know, what we ought to do and what makes life worth living. It trains a kind of thinking that is precise, rigorous and willing to question assumptions that other disciplines take for granted, and the skills it develops, in argument, conceptual analysis and clear expression, are valuable in almost any field. Combining philosophy with Spanish at the University of Dundee gives you both the intellectual depth of philosophical study and the practical and cultural richness of a second language, along with a year abroad to deepen both. This four-year full-time programme develops your philosophical understanding across the core areas of the discipline: epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of language and the history of philosophy from antiquity to the present. Your Spanish study will develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to an advanced level, alongside engagement with the cultures, literatures and histories of the Spanish-speaking world. The year abroad gives you extended time in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening both your language competence and your cultural understanding. The two disciplines complement each other in interesting ways, since philosophy of language intersects naturally with the study of a different linguistic system. Philosophy graduates are known for the quality of their analytical and argumentative skills, and employers across a wide range of sectors value those capabilities. Law, the civil service, journalism, consulting, education, public policy, ethics in business and the technology sector are all fields where philosophy graduates find their training useful. The addition of advanced Spanish significantly broadens the range of professional and geographical opportunities. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, Spanish studies, translation or related fields.
