BA Photography
About this course
Photography is an art form and a documentary practice, a tool of commerce and a vehicle for personal expression. It encompasses the technical mastery of light, optics, digital systems and darkroom processes, the critical understanding of photographic history and theory, and the creative ability to develop a distinctive visual voice. Photography degrees take the medium seriously across its full range: from fine art and documentary to fashion, commercial, editorial and community practice. Understanding photography deeply means engaging with it as both a technical discipline and a culturally embedded practice that shapes how we see the world. At the University of Westminster this part-time degree offers a dynamic and comprehensive approach to photographic study that combines creative exploration with technical expertise and critical thinking. You will engage with photography across a wide range of genres and practices, developing your own strong individual creative voice while also building the professional skills and critical frameworks needed to situate your work within the broader history and practice of the medium. Westminster's long-established photography programmes are known for developing graduates who are both technically skilled and creatively distinctive. Graduates from Photography degrees go on to careers as photographers across editorial, commercial, documentary, fine art, fashion and community contexts. Many build portfolio careers that combine different types of photographic work with teaching, exhibition and commission-based practice. Others find roles in photo editing, art direction, visual communications, gallery and museum education, and the broader creative industries. The combination of technical skill, critical awareness and creative practice the degree develops also transfers well into adjacent fields such as film, animation and digital content production. Postgraduate study in photography, fine art or visual culture is an option for those wishing to develop their practice further.
