BSc Physical Education and Sports Coaching with Foundation Year
About this course
Physical education and sports coaching are disciplines concerned with how people learn to move, how physical activity is taught effectively, and how coaching can unlock potential in athletes and participants of all abilities and backgrounds. PE examines the educational, psychological, sociological and physiological dimensions of physical activity and sport in formal and informal settings; sports coaching focuses on the practical and theoretical skills needed to plan, deliver and evaluate coaching programmes that develop performance. Together they prepare you for the wide range of roles in education and sport that require both subject knowledge and the ability to inspire and develop others. At York St John University this part-time programme includes a foundation year option, making it accessible for students who need to build academic foundations before entering the main degree curriculum. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you extensive professional experience in educational and sporting environments alongside your academic development. You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, pedagogy, coaching practice, physical education curriculum design, and the social and cultural dimensions of sport, developing both the practical competence and the critical understanding that effective educators and coaches need. Graduates are well placed for careers in school-based physical education, sports coaching and development, community sport, leisure and fitness management, national governing bodies, elite performance environments, and sports development roles in local authorities and voluntary organisations. Teaching in schools, typically after completing a PGCE or School Direct route, is one of the most common destinations. Sports coaching at community and elite levels, sports development coordination, and roles in health and wellbeing promotion are others. Postgraduate study in sports science, coaching, physical education, or sports management is a natural extension for those wishing to develop specialist expertise or move into leadership and research roles.
