BA Physical Education
About this course
Physical education as an academic discipline goes far beyond learning to teach sport in schools, though that is certainly one of its central applications. It draws on exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, pedagogy, and sociology to examine how and why people engage in physical activity, how physical literacy is developed across the lifespan, and how PE as a school subject can contribute to young people's health, wellbeing, and development. It asks how the body learns to move, how we motivate different kinds of learners, and what role sport and physical activity play in individual and community life. At Leeds Beckett University this three-year full-time programme takes a multidisciplinary approach that allows you to tailor your studies to your individual career goals and learning interests, engaging with teaching and schools-based content alongside sport science, psychology, and management. You will develop the theoretical grounding of the discipline alongside the practical pedagogical skills that teaching physical education in schools requires. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study physical education or sport in an international context and develop a comparative perspective on how PE is delivered in different educational systems. Physical education graduates typically go on to careers in secondary school teaching, often through a PGCE or Schools Direct route, as the degree provides the subject knowledge foundation that teacher training requires. Others move into sports development, community sport, coaching, strength and conditioning, physical activity promotion, and leisure management. The combination of physical, scientific, and educational knowledge the degree develops is valuable across any professional context that engages with sport, activity, or health in a structured way. Some graduates also pursue postgraduate study in sport science, physical education, or educational leadership.
