BA Physical Education
About this course
Physical education as an academic subject is concerned with understanding the role of movement, sport, and physical activity in human development and well-being, and with preparing practitioners who can educate and inspire young people in these areas. It draws on physiology, psychology, sociology, and pedagogy to build a comprehensive understanding of why physical activity matters, how people learn physical skills, and how teachers and coaches can create environments that engage and develop all learners, not only the naturally athletic. This three-year, full-time programme at the University of St Mark and St John is designed for those who know they want to work in education but are exploring whether they prefer primary or secondary settings. You will develop your understanding of physical development across different age groups, the principles of effective physical education teaching, and the broader educational and social context in which physical education operates. The programme combines academic study with practical engagement in physical education settings, giving you first-hand experience of teaching and coaching in different environments. Graduates typically move into careers in teaching, either in primary or secondary schools, and the programme provides a foundation for further professional qualification as a teacher through routes such as the PGCE. Beyond schools, graduates work in sports coaching, health and fitness, community sport development, leisure management, and sports administration. The skills in communication, organisation, and understanding of physical development that the degree develops are also applicable in roles in health promotion, youth work, and outdoor education. The broad focus of the programme is designed precisely to keep options open while building genuine professional knowledge and practical confidence.
