About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, concerned with understanding the basic principles that govern how the universe works, from the behaviour of subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of space and time. Physicists develop the conceptual and mathematical tools that underpin all other natural sciences and much of modern technology. The industrial physics programme at the University of Leeds goes further than a standard physics degree by building a direct connection between that fundamental scientific training and the practical demands of industry, preparing graduates who can apply rigorous physical thinking to engineering and technology challenges in a professional context. Over four years full-time, you will cover the core areas of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and optics, developing strong skills in mathematical modelling and experimental technique. The industrial element of the degree is delivered through a sandwich year, in which you spend a full year working in an industrial or research organisation. This structured professional placement is central to the programme and gives you direct experience of how physics is applied outside academia, building the practical and professional skills that employers consistently value. Work placement provision is also built in throughout the course. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. The career destinations of industrial physics graduates are genuinely diverse. Advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defence, medical devices, energy, electronics, telecommunications, and data science are all sectors that actively recruit physicists.
