About this course
Physics is the science that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the behaviour of matter and energy across all scales, from subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe. Its insights underpin every other natural science and much of modern technology, from the semiconductors in computing hardware to the lasers used in surgery and manufacturing, and from the materials used in aerospace to the instruments that detect gravitational waves. Studying physics develops a particular kind of disciplined curiosity: the ability to ask precise questions about the world and to construct rigorous answers using mathematics, experiment, and theoretical reasoning. At the University of Hull, this four-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in fundamental physics and mathematics, covering classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and modern physics. You will develop investigative skills through laboratory work and data analysis, and you will engage with research areas including advanced materials, lasers, and space science, tackling questions that are not yet resolved in the literature. The fourth year deepens your specialisation and typically includes a substantial research project that prepares you for postgraduate work or research-adjacent careers. Physics graduates are among the most highly sought-after graduates in the economy because the degree develops exceptional problem-solving and quantitative skills that transfer across many domains. Common careers include roles in the technology sector, financial services including quantitative analysis, engineering, data science, scientific research, nuclear energy, defence, and science communication. Many physics graduates also pursue postgraduate study in physics, astrophysics, materials science, or related fields, and a substantial number go on to doctoral research.
