About this course

Physics is the foundational science, seeking to understand the laws that govern the universe from the smallest subatomic scales to the largest cosmic structures. It explores matter, energy, space and time through a combination of mathematical reasoning, experimental observation and theoretical model-building, and the insights it generates have repeatedly transformed technology and our understanding of reality. Whether investigating quantum phenomena, the dynamics of fluids, the behaviour of condensed matter or the physics of stars and galaxies, physicists develop ways of thinking that are among the most precise and transferable of any discipline. At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time degree comes with a range of structural options built in. The degree includes a foundation year, providing a supported pathway for students who would benefit from additional mathematical or scientific preparation before the main physics programme begins. A sandwich year with work placement opportunities is available, giving you the chance to spend time in a research, industrial or scientific environment as part of your studies. A year abroad can also be incorporated, allowing you to study at a partner institution in another country. This combination of structural flexibility means you can shape your degree around a foundation year, a placement year, a year abroad, or some combination, depending on your background and ambitions. Typical entry is around 120 UCAS tariff points. Physics graduates are consistently among the most employable of all science graduates. The analytical and quantitative skills developed transfer directly to careers in data science, finance, engineering, defence, energy, software, medical physics and research. Many graduates also continue to doctoral study in physics, astrophysics, materials science, photonics or engineering. The rigour of physical reasoning and the ability to model complex systems under uncertainty are assets in almost any professional context that requires systematic, evidence-based thinking.
