BSc Physics with Artificial Intelligence
About this course
Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, seeking to understand the principles that govern matter, energy, space, and time at every scale from elementary particles to the cosmos. It is the discipline from which so much of modern technology has emerged, from semiconductors and lasers to medical imaging and satellite communications, and it continues to drive innovation across engineering, materials science, computing, and medicine. Artificial intelligence, in turn, is one of the most significant technological developments of recent decades, underpinning advances in everything from language processing and image recognition to drug discovery and autonomous systems. Studying physics with artificial intelligence means developing the deep quantitative foundations of physics alongside the mathematical and computational tools that power modern AI. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of classical and modern physics alongside a thorough grounding in machine learning, data science, and the algorithmic foundations of artificial intelligence. You will study mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and statistical physics, and apply quantitative reasoning to AI problems that range from neural network design to the analysis of complex datasets. A placement or work experience year is built into the programme, and a year abroad is also available, both of which add professional and international dimensions to your studies. You will develop exceptional quantitative skills, the capacity to model complex systems, and the programming and data analysis fluency that employers across the technology sector increasingly demand. The combination of physics and AI is one of the most powerful skill sets available to a science graduate. Graduates find roles in data science, machine learning engineering, quantitative finance, scientific computing, technology research, and across the spectrum of industries that are applying AI methods to real problems. Many also pursue postgraduate study in physics, AI, or at the boundary of the two.
