MPhys Physics with Artificial Intelligence
About this course
Physics with artificial intelligence is a degree that reflects the profound way machine learning and computational methods are reshaping scientific research. Physics is the discipline concerned with the fundamental laws governing matter, energy, space and time, and it has always been a field of deep mathematical and computational sophistication. AI and machine learning are now being used across physics to analyse vast datasets from particle accelerators and telescopes, to model complex physical systems, to design experiments and to discover patterns that no human analyst could find unaided. This programme trains you to work fluently in both domains. At Southampton this four-year full-time programme takes you through the core content of an MPhys degree, covering classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, special relativity and advanced mathematical methods. The AI strand introduces you to machine learning, neural networks, probabilistic modelling, data analysis and the computational tools that modern research physicists use. You will learn to apply these methods to physical problems rather than treating them as separate disciplines, understanding both the capabilities and the limitations of AI approaches in scientific contexts. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the programme's combination of rigorous physics and computational depth. Graduates are equipped for careers and further study across an exceptionally wide range of fields. Many continue to doctoral research in physics, astrophysics, quantum computing, particle physics or AI-driven scientific research. Others move into data science, software engineering, quantitative finance, scientific computing, defence technology, medical physics and healthcare data analysis. The combination of physical intuition, mathematical fluency and computational expertise is genuinely rare and commands strong interest from employers in both technical and research-intensive sectors. The MPhys designation also means graduates are well placed for chartered physicist status through the relevant professional body.
