MPhys Physics with Astrophysics (International)
About this course
Astrophysics explores the universe beyond the Earth, from the planets around other stars to the most distant galaxies, seeking to understand the physical processes that govern matter, energy, space, and time on the largest scales. It is a field constantly evolving, with new discoveries and technological developments transforming what we know about the cosmos on a regular basis. Physics with astrophysics combines the rigorous quantitative foundations of physics with the specific theories and observational methods used to study stars, galaxies, black holes, dark matter, and the large-scale structure of the universe. At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of physics from its mathematical foundations through to its application in understanding astrophysical phenomena. You will study classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum physics, thermodynamics, and relativity alongside cosmology, stellar physics, and observational astronomy. Quantitative and computational skills are central throughout, and you will learn to analyse data, develop models, and communicate scientific results clearly. An international year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the experience of studying physics in a different institutional context and strengthening your research and personal development. Entry typically requires around 152 UCAS tariff points. Physics and astrophysics graduates are highly valued for their analytical and quantitative skills across a wide range of sectors. Many work in research, space agencies, defence, finance, data science, technology, and engineering. Others go into science communication, education, and policy. Postgraduate study in astrophysics, physics, or related disciplines is a common next step for those wishing to pursue research careers.
