MPhys Physics with Astrophysics
About this course
Physics with astrophysics combines the foundational discipline of all natural science with the study of the largest structures and most extreme phenomena in the universe. Physics provides the mathematical and experimental framework for understanding matter, energy, space, and time, while astrophysics applies those frameworks to stars, galaxies, black holes, neutron stars, the cosmic microwave background, and the large-scale structure of the universe itself. Studying the two together means building a thorough grounding in the principles of physics while also developing specialist knowledge of the observations, theories, and computational methods that astronomy and astrophysics demand. At the University of Hull, this four-year full-time degree gives you a thorough understanding of fundamental physics and mathematics concepts alongside investigative skills you can apply in new areas of science, technology, and enterprise. You will develop expertise across the core areas of physics, from classical mechanics and electromagnetism through to quantum mechanics and special relativity, alongside the astrophysical topics that connect these principles to the behaviour of objects at cosmic scales. Hull's physics department provides a supportive environment for students developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills. Physics and astrophysics graduates have consistently strong career outcomes across a wide range of sectors. Many go on to research careers in astronomy, cosmology, or physics, pursuing doctoral study at universities and research institutes. Others move into sectors including data science, finance, technology, engineering, and scientific computing, where the quantitative and analytical skills physics training develops are in high demand. Teaching, both at secondary and tertiary level, is also a well-established pathway. The combination of rigorous mathematical thinking, experimental competence, and astrophysical knowledge makes this a degree that opens doors across the full breadth of technically demanding careers.
