BSc Physics with Astrophysics
About this course
Physics with astrophysics is a degree that grounds you in the rigorous mathematical and experimental science of physics while also opening a window onto the largest questions human beings have ever asked: how did the universe begin, how are stars and galaxies formed, what is dark matter, and are there other worlds like ours? Astrophysics applies the principles of physics to the study of astronomical objects and phenomena, from the planets of our solar system to the most distant galaxies, and it is a field that is constantly advancing as new instruments and missions reveal the universe in ever finer detail. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you significant professional and international experience during your degree. This is unusual for a physics programme and reflects Leeds's commitment to developing graduates who are not only scientifically excellent but professionally experienced. You will study the core of physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and mathematical methods, alongside astrophysics content covering stellar physics, galaxy formation, cosmology, observational techniques, and the physics of extreme objects such as black holes and neutron stars. The combination develops both the deep technical knowledge and the quantitative problem-solving skills that characterise physics graduates. Graduates from physics and astrophysics programmes go on to careers in research, industry, finance, data science, technology, education, and the public sector. The rigorous quantitative and analytical training a physics degree provides is valued across an exceptionally wide range of professional contexts, far beyond astronomy and physics itself. Many graduates pursue postgraduate research in astrophysics, physics, or related sciences, and some go on to work with space agencies, observatories, or technology companies at the frontier of the field.
