BSc Physics with Astrophysics
About this course
Physics with astrophysics is the study of the physical universe from the subatomic scale to the cosmic, combining a rigorous grounding in physics with a specialist engagement with the science of stars, galaxies, black holes, and the large-scale structure and history of the universe. Astrophysics applies the laws of physics to environments of extreme temperature, density, and scale that cannot be reproduced on Earth, and in doing so both tests those laws and extends our understanding of them. It is one of the most intellectually ambitious fields in science, and engaging with it seriously requires exactly the kind of mathematical and physical training that a physics degree provides. At Sussex, this programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before the main degree begins. You will build a strong foundation in classical and modern physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics, alongside the mathematical tools that physics demands. The astrophysics component develops specialist knowledge in stellar physics, cosmology, galactic dynamics, and the observational and computational methods used to study the universe. A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and a work placement are all incorporated, giving you a range of professional and international experiences that extend the academic content of the degree. Physics graduates are valued across a wide range of sectors because of the analytical and mathematical skills the degree develops. Astrophysics graduates find careers in scientific research, data science, computing, finance, engineering, and science communication, as well as in the space and aerospace industries, which are expanding rapidly. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study, including doctoral research in astrophysics, cosmology, or physics more broadly. The skills you develop in this programme are among the most transferable available in higher education.
