About this course

Physics with music is an unusual but intellectually coherent combination that reflects the deep connections between the physical sciences and musical experience. Sound is a physical phenomenon, and the science of acoustics, vibration, resonance and the behaviour of waves underpins both the design of musical instruments and the engineering of recording and concert spaces. At the same time, music is a cultural and artistic practice with its own history, theory and analytical traditions. Studying both develops a distinctive dual competence that few graduates possess. At Royal Holloway, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you both practical industry experience and international exposure alongside your academic study. You will develop skills in mathematics, experimental physics, computing and physical theory alongside training in musical composition, performance, historical musicology and music analysis. The programme is designed to maximise your graduate employability by combining the rigorous quantitative skills of a physics degree with the creative and analytical skills of music study, producing a graduate profile that is distinctive and versatile. Graduates from physics with music programmes pursue a wide range of careers, reflecting the breadth of the degree. Many enter scientific roles in engineering, technology, data science or research, where the physics training is directly relevant. Others work in the music industry, broadcasting, sound engineering, music education, music technology or arts administration, where the musical training is valued. Many find careers where both sets of skills are relevant, including acoustics, audio engineering, music technology research and science communication. Postgraduate study in physics, acoustics, music technology or music is a natural next step for those who want to develop their expertise in either direction.
