BSc Physics with Philosophy (with a year abroad)
About this course
Physics and philosophy address the deepest questions about the nature of reality from two different but complementary directions. Physics does so through experiment and mathematical theory, building precise and predictive accounts of how matter, energy, space, and time behave. Philosophy does so through conceptual analysis and argument, asking what the results of physics mean, what the limits of scientific explanation are, and how knowledge of the physical world relates to our experience of it. At the University of York, the BSc Physics with Philosophy runs over four years of full-time study and includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you both theoretical depth and professional experience. The physics component gives you a rigorous grounding in classical and modern physics: mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and the physics of the cosmos. The philosophy component engages with questions directly prompted by physics and broader philosophical concerns. Philosophy of science asks how scientific knowledge is produced and validated, and whether scientific theories give us genuine insight into reality or merely useful predictive models. Philosophy of physics engages with the interpretation of quantum mechanics, the nature of space and time, and the relationship between the physical and the observable. Broader areas of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics, develop your capacity for rigorous argument and conceptual clarity. As the programme's current description suggests, you follow in a tradition of thinkers for whom physics and philosophy were inseparable. Graduates of physics with philosophy degrees carry a distinctive combination of scientific rigour and philosophical depth. Careers in academic research, science policy, science communication, technology, data science, finance, and the law all value this combination. Philosophy of science and philosophy of physics are themselves productive areas of postgraduate research for those who wish to pursue academic careers. The work placement and sandwich year add professional experience that strengthens the employability the degree provides. The combination of analytical precision, quantitative ability, and philosophical breadth makes graduates of this programme unusually versatile.
