About this course

Physiotherapy is the healthcare profession concerned with restoring movement and function to people affected by injury, illness, disability or ageing. Physiotherapists work across the full range of health conditions, from musculoskeletal injuries and neurological conditions to respiratory disease, paediatric development and rehabilitation after surgery. The profession combines a rigorous understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and pathology with the practical skills to assess, treat and rehabilitate patients, and the communication abilities to work effectively with individuals and within multidisciplinary teams. At Teesside University you will study for three years full-time, developing the theoretical knowledge and practical competence the profession demands. You will cover anatomy and physiology, movement science, clinical assessment and treatment techniques, including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and electrotherapy, alongside the professional and ethical dimensions of clinical practice. Clinical placements are central to the programme, placing you in a variety of healthcare settings where you develop the hands-on skills and clinical reasoning that distinguish a competent physiotherapist. The programme prepares you to apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council. Registered physiotherapists work across NHS trusts, community health services, private practice, sports organisations, occupational health settings, schools and residential care. Specialisms include musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, respiratory care, sports and exercise physiotherapy, paediatrics and women's health. Many physiotherapists develop extended scope practice, becoming specialists or advanced practitioners in areas such as injections, discharge planning or clinical research. Postgraduate study offers routes into specialist clinical practice, academic physiotherapy or research, and the profession consistently offers strong employment prospects across the UK and internationally.
