BSc Physiotherapy
About this course
Physiotherapy is an allied health profession concerned with restoring and maintaining movement and function across a wide range of conditions, from musculoskeletal injury and neurological impairment to respiratory disease and post-surgical rehabilitation. Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat patients using manual therapy, exercise prescription, movement re-education, and patient education, drawing on a strong evidence base and adapting their approach to the individual needs and goals of each person they work with. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time degree prepares you to work as part of a multidisciplinary health and social care team, developing not only clinical and practical skills but also the leadership, digital literacy, and research skills needed to practise effectively in a changing healthcare environment. The programme takes a practice-based approach, with learning situated in a stimulating clinical and simulated environment, and includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you substantial real-world clinical experience before you complete your degree. This combination of academic rigour and extensive practice exposure is central to developing the holistic, patient-centred approach that effective physiotherapy requires. Completion of an approved physiotherapy programme and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council are the standard pathway to professional practice. Physiotherapists work across NHS hospitals, community services, private practice, sports organisations, occupational health, care homes, and specialist rehabilitation services. The profession offers significant scope for career development, with many physiotherapists progressing into specialist clinical roles, advanced practice, management, education, or research. Postgraduate qualifications in specialist areas of physiotherapy practice, such as musculoskeletal, neurological, paediatric, or pelvic health physiotherapy, are available for those who wish to extend their clinical expertise.
