Polish and Swedish are languages that connect you to two very different but equally significant parts of the European world. Polish is the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages after Russian, spoken by some 45 million people and the official language of a country whose history, from the partitions and the Second World War to Solidarnosc and European integration, is among the most significant in the modern European experience. Swedish opens access to Scandinavia, a region renowned for its social model, design culture, environmental leadership, and literary tradition, and connects you to a language community that includes Sweden, Finland, and large diaspora communities worldwide. Studying both at UCL gives you a distinctive and genuine bilingual competence. This four-year, full-time programme at University College London divides your time equally between the two languages. You will develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both Polish and Swedish, alongside cultural content covering literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in both language communities. The year abroad, spent in the third year, is split between countries where your two languages are spoken, giving you immersive experience in both linguistic environments.
