BA Politics and Sociology
About this course
Politics and sociology are disciplines that illuminate each other. Politics examines how power is organised, contested, and exercised through institutions, parties, ideologies, and governance structures, while sociology investigates the social forces, inequalities, and cultural patterns that shape human life and give politics its content. Studying them together gives you a framework for understanding how personal experience is connected to broader structures, and how the decisions of governments and institutions affect the way societies are organised. At Sheffield this three-year full-time programme allows you to explore modules from both disciplines, analysing key topics such as globalisation, migration, and gender from a political perspective and then examining how these issues play out in social life. Sheffield is a research-intensive university with particular strengths in both political science and sociology, and the curriculum reflects the depth and range of that expertise. The programme includes a sandwich year, offering substantial professional experience in an organisation relevant to your interests, as well as opportunities for a year abroad and work placement. These options allow you to engage with political and social questions in a different national context or in a professional setting, enriching the analytical perspective you develop through your academic study. Graduates go on to careers in the civil service, journalism, public policy, social research, community work, education, law, NGOs, and many other fields where analytical and communicative ability is valued. The combination of political and sociological perspectives is particularly useful for roles that require understanding complex social problems and how institutions respond to them. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in politics, sociology, social policy, or related disciplines, building on the analytical foundations the degree provides.
