BA Politics & Modern History
About this course
Politics and modern history are disciplines that belong together. The political world we inhabit today, with its institutions, ideologies, conflicts, and international order, was shaped by the events of the past century and a half, and understanding it well requires both the conceptual tools of political science and the historical knowledge to see how the present emerged from the past. A degree combining both fields trains you to move between analytical frameworks and historical evidence, using each to deepen the other. At Aberystwyth University, the home of one of the world's oldest international politics departments, this three-year, full-time degree combines the expertise of political scientists and historians in an integrated course structure. You will choose from a range of modules in both history and politics, exploring key themes such as power, violence, economics, society, and how these forces have shaped the modern world. You will study the development of political thought and international relations, examining how ideas about democracy, sovereignty, justice, and security have evolved. The historical dimension grounds these theoretical discussions in concrete events and turning points, from the emergence of nation-states and the world wars to the Cold War and beyond. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points, and teaching is shared between departments with strong research identities in both fields. The analytical, research, and communication skills developed by politics and modern history are valued across a broad range of careers. Graduates move into the civil service, journalism, the foreign office and diplomatic service, NGOs, international organisations, policy analysis and think tanks, law, education, and the media. Aberystwyth's particular strength in international politics adds value for those interested in foreign affairs and global institutions. Postgraduate study in political science, international relations, history, or public policy is a natural route for those who want to go deeper into either discipline.
