BA Politics, Philosophy and Economics
About this course
Politics, philosophy, and economics, commonly known as PPE, is one of the most celebrated and intellectually demanding combinations in the social sciences and humanities. Politics examines how power is exercised, how institutions and systems of government function, and how collective decisions are made and contested in democratic and non-democratic societies. Philosophy brings to bear the tools of rigorous argument, asking foundational questions about knowledge, ethics, and the nature of human action. Economics analyses how resources are allocated and how incentives shape behaviour at the level of individuals, markets, and entire economies. Together, the three disciplines offer an unusually comprehensive framework for understanding social and political life. At York St John University this three-year programme allows you to engage with theories, ideologies, and processes shaping modern thinking and society, exploring crucial contemporary debates through the complementary perspectives of all three disciplines. The programme includes a foundation year, giving you a structured introduction before the main degree begins, as well as a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, providing a combination of professional experience and international exposure that enriches the academic study and strengthens career preparation. Graduates from PPE programmes go into an exceptionally wide range of careers. Politics, the civil service, law, journalism, think tanks, international organisations, and the voluntary sector are among the most common destinations. Finance, management consultancy, and the private sector also value the analytical and communicative skills PPE develops. The degree is particularly associated with careers in public life and policy, though its graduates are valued across every sector where rigorous thinking and the ability to synthesise complex information are needed. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in law, economics, public policy, or philosophy.
